10 Oscar Nominations

More is More

James Gunn There are going to be 10 Oscar Nominees for Best Film this year. This just so happens to fall on the worst year for movies in 30 years.

Don Amen

Matt Amazing turn of events, it is.

Philip Yeah, I'm not so sure I really respect the Oscars anymore. But for some reason I'm a sucker to watch them. I guess I'm always curious to see how they're going to fuck up or at least surprise me. Usually, they just fuck up.

Don 9 times out of 10 I've never seen any of the "Best Picture" movies, or even HEARD of half of them.

Don p.s. watched "The Specials" the other day, now THAT was a good movie.

Meara So basically, anyone who says it's an honor just to be nominated is, well, wrong.
Precious, The Hangover.....and that's about it.

Tzuri what are u talking about?? didnt legaly blonde 3 come out on dvd this year?? ( sarcastic tone ).

Patrick 10 Best of the year in my opinion, which many people will disagree:
Observe and Report
Rudo y Cursi
Away We Go
(500) Days of Summer... See More
Paper Heart
Inglourious Basterds
World's Greatest Dad
Brothers
An Education
Up in the Air

Chris No, it's still an honor, there are many, MANY movies made in a year.

James Gunn Patrick - I'm with you on Observe and Report! Most underrated comedy of the year!

Christian Ingolorious Basterds, District 9, Where the Wild Things Are, A Serious Man, Coraline, Moon... this year has had some great films. You can't judge a year by mainstream movies as many of them are crap, but there's always gems hidden in there
.

Cat How about The Hurt Locker

James Gunn Here and on Twitter people are listing two or three great movies and a handful of good to mediocre films. The Best Film category is going to be embarrassing.

Christian And what movies would you consider great?

Culture but the friday the 13th remake came out this year!

Cat Too bad the Academy picked the wrong year to do this. There have been other times when it would have been great. Not up to the choices they had in 1939/40, but interesting.

Don If there was justice, "Ink" would be up for Best Picture.

Andrew Strongly disagree - though some of the films bound to be nominated (I'm looking at you, Precious) are pretty awful, this year also has (deep breath): Inglourious Basterds, In the Loop, Up, The Hurt Locker, A Serious Man, Star Trek, District 9, Up in the Air, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Observe & Report, Police Adjective, Moon, Avatar, Adventureland, The ...

White Ribbon, Antichrist, Collapse, Coraline, Where the Wild Things Are, Crank 2, and - though I may be one of the few who truly loves it - The Box...this year's much stronger than last year, even if it doesn't have the concentrated brilliance of '07. But then again, I clearly have way too much free time on my hands.

Rebecca Jason at least they made room for All about Steve

Peter 1999 was so much better than 2009.

Mike Oh, did Precious suck? I didn't see it, just assumed it was good. Julie and Julia will probably get a nod.

Cat Didn't see it either. But even if it did suck, the Oprah factor will undoubtedly put it in the running.

Lee what gets me is movies like the one where the next karate kid plays the chic who crashed her plane that movie only exists to get Oscar nods i dont think amelia earhart would watch that movie

Matthew Fuck it, let's just give PATTON another Oscar, hire "masseuses" to jerk off all the celebrities and let them walk up and down a red carpet for an hour while pictures are taken. You know who should REALLY get Oscars?!? Everybody who had to sit through TRANSFORMERS 2, G.I. JOE, STREET FIGHTER, JENNIFER'S BODY, BRIDAL WARS, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: ...

THE SQUEAKQUEL, OLD DOGS,THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1-2-3, TERMINATOR: SALVATION, WHITEOUT, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, NEW IN TOWN, ANGELS & DEMONS, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN, FAME and A CHRISTMAS CAROL in a theater. Not only are they winners, they're SURVIVORS.

Michael Loved Obvserve and Report. Time is gonna tell on that one. Also, The Hurt Locker, 500 Days of Summer and Watchmen did it for me

Michael And Up In The Air was great too.

Christian I forgot about 500 Days of Summer. See, 2009 wasn't a bad year. People just love to bitch about how movies aren't as good as they used to be. There will always be stinkers and classics, you just need to know where to look.

Brendan A year with Watchmen, district 9, Zombieland and Avatar is not in my opinion an all that bad year, we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on that one dude.

Rob I dunno, thought there were a few great films this year. Hurt Locker, Moon, District 9, Inglorious Basterds were alwell up there and although it was pish really, I had a blast at Final Destination whateveritwas in 3D.l

Mike Do you think any movie advertising as a Best Picture Nominee for this year will be forced to put an asterisk next to it?

Matthew I liked WATCHMEN a bit, I'll never understand why it didn't do better than it did. Aside from fans of the graphic novel, a lot of people didn't "get" it, but those that did are fanatical about it.

Arthur Not really that different than any other year..is it?

Avatar, not so bad - we are the terrorists...got to love that message.

500 days of Summer - losers can also breed...got to love that message.

District 9 - we are the terrorists...got to love that message.

The Hurt Locker - we are the terrorists...got to love that message.

Food Inc. - we are the, uh the...not sure what we are...got to love that message.

Inglorious Basterds - we are the heroes of the 1940's and you can torture and kill bad people and it's OK...got to love that message.

Up - ah live a good life with your wife and when you die fly away with your house that is finally paid for on a bunch of helium balloons...got to love that message.

Ah, towards the end, if the Roman Empire had cinema...what would it have looked like? Transformers meet GI Joe meets Jennifer's Body...
